Information-processing demands and the multinational enterprise: a comparison of foreign and domestic earnings estimates

چکیده
We examine the information-processing demands top managers of the multinational enterprise (MNE) deal with in their portfolio of international operations by comparing the accuracy of foreign and domestic earnings estimates. Results indicate that the increase in information-processing demands is due to the complexity of managing foreign operations of the MNE. We also find greater information processing demands in foreign operations for managers of smaller multinational firms, firms with relatively low performance, and firms with lower levels of intangible assets. We use these results to develop implications for information-processing theory and practice. D 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Using the corresponding industry return in the foreign countries, I show that the foreign operations information of multinational firms is slowly incorporated into stock prices. A trading strategy based on this effect generates an abnormal return of approximately 0.8% per month, or 9.6% per year, controlling for risk-based factors. The return predictability is not driven by U.S. industry moment...

This study tests the agency cost hypothesis in the context of geographic earnings disclosures. The agency cost hypothesis predicts that managers, when not monitored by shareholders, will make self-maximizing decisions which may not necessarily be in the best interest of shareholders. These decisions include aggressively growing the firm, which reduces profitability and destroys firm value. Geog...
